The communal circulation areas are furnished with smart furniture that allows for a variety of uses, ranging from meetings to informal work, from relaxation to welcoming visitors. But what truly sets the offices and other workspaces at the new BCC headquarters in Pachino apart – an iconic building nestled in greenery and blending into the landscape – is the panoramic nature and quality of the views outwards.
A permeable, lightweight, breathable building, constructed around a steel frame; sustainable, recyclable, lightweight and quick to assemble; easy to maintain or repair. A building that utilises bioclimatic strategies based on the specific characteristics of its location, adapting to the topography of the site whilst taking account of its orientation, opening out towards the slope to welcome the prevailing winds, and fragmenting to create cavities, overhangs, shadows, and establishing an inseparable, symbiotic relationship with the surrounding environment. The structure’s envelope—a transparent, vibrant skin—filters solar radiation whilst maintaining and defining the visual relationship with the outside world.
With its central square/amphitheatre, it is almost reminiscent of the old farmhouses that were built around the ‘baglio’ and which dot the Sicilian countryside. Indeed, here too the central open space plays a vital role, serving as a venue for internal events but also as a meeting place between the BCC and the local community, as well as a space for relaxation or informal work.
