Visitor Centre

The Visitor Centre is designed to be a distinctive building whilst also blending into the landscape, like a graft that changes according to its surroundings. The majestic Hverfjall reshapes the architectural form, causing the roof to curve in line with the volcano’s ridge. We were inspired by the shape of the rock carvings at Dimmuborgir. We wanted to create a space that was not confined by walls but resembled a large covered square, flowing seamlessly into the outdoors and the landscape.

The building resembles a wooden boat on a sea of lava, moored and waiting in a safe harbour, having just arrived from distant lands and ready to explore the surrounding area…
