Volcano Museum

The architectural design is based on the desire to create a structure that is both ‘camouflaged’ and iconic, capable of becoming a landmark and an integral part of the landscape. The new forms arise from careful observation of the surroundings, from which they draw their shapes, materials and colours. Small volcanoes emerge from the ground along a ridge, where each element blends into the next, in a coordinated and unified movement. A new landscape takes shape, consisting of fragments of earth rising from their points of origin to create a continuous, panoramic walkway towards Hverfjall volcano, Lake Mýtván and the entire surrounding landscape. The new volumes function as interconnected cells, not only in plan but also in elevation, creating a cohesive whole. Each cell has its own crater, which serves as a sheltered outdoor garden onto which the windows open, bringing in not only light but also architectural quality.
