The result is an interior design that celebrates lightness, where every structural and furnishing element contributes to creating a dynamic yet meticulously ordered space. The stylistic approach adopted is a fresh, contemporary one, characterised by simple, clean lines. The project’s defining feature is the skilful balance between formal restraint and emotional warmth.
Light as an Architectural
Element The pursuit of an essential sense of space has been fundamental, but not at the expense of comfort. The overall atmosphere is designed to be welcoming and relaxing, thanks to a meticulous study of light. Lighting is not merely an accessory, but an architectural element that follows and enhances the forms, highlighting the furnishings.
Suspended ceilings feature linear light fixtures and perimeter LED strips, creating soft, diffused ambient lighting. In the living room and kitchen, a system of tracks and recessed black spotlights creates a graphic contrast that directs the light onto worktops and relaxation areas, adding depth and character. Glancing light on textured wall coverings or wallpaper enhances their texture, transforming the walls into dramatic backdrops.
Living Area and Kitchen: Seamless
Functionality The living area is designed as an open-plan space, yet skilfully divided into distinct functional zones. The spacious, well-equipped kitchen is arranged along two main axes: a wall of all-white columns incorporating appliances and a larder, and a forest-green wall-mounted unit. The centrepiece is the large central island, fitted with an induction hob and an integrated sink, which serves as a worktop, snack area and social hub.
One particularly practical feature is the utility room: a functional yet unobtrusive space that opens onto the kitchen via a modern sliding door. This solution allows the utility area to be concealed, preserving the kitchen’s minimalist aesthetic whilst ensuring immediate and convenient access.
Full Spaces, Empty Spaces and Surprise
Corners: In this project, DFG Architetti demonstrates that minimalism is not the absence of creativity, but a quest for balance between full and empty spaces. A prime example of this is the feature separating the sofa area from the dining area: a TV unit, partly suspended from the ceiling, which acts as a backdrop. This volume, which appears to be a ‘solid’, is a multifunctional partition that maintains the visual connection between the areas.
In the large floor-to-ceiling shelf, between the base of the TV wall unit and the suspended unit, there is a bioethanol fireplace. This creates a striking strip of flame that adds an element of surprise and warmth, defining a focal point that enriches the room without making it feel cluttered. Elegance stems from simplicity, and those ‘unexpected’ touches are the key to personalising the space.
The Expressiveness of Wallpaper
Another distinctive feature of the design is the sophisticated and deliberate use of wallpaper to lend personality to the most intimate spaces.
In the master bedroom, a large-scale abstract design in shades of taupe and grey covers the upper section of the headboard, creating a soft, textile backdrop that enhances and frames the bed.
In the bathrooms, the wallpapers become veritable artistic backdrops: one bathroom is adorned with a tropical theme in warm shades of antique pink and sage green, balanced by an anthracite-grey wall-mounted unit; another, more intimate bathroom features an abstract floral texture in textured shades of grey, which complements the natural stone and the suspended elements in wood and Corian.
The Open View: Visual and Functional
Expansion The project has maximised the penthouse’s views. The living area has been fully oriented towards the terrace, removing barriers and prioritising large sliding glass panels. This has created an uninterrupted connection between the interior and exterior, transforming the terrace into a true extension of the living room. The design of the sightlines is carefully calibrated to guide the gaze through the interior spaces, from the kitchen right out to the horizon. Ultimately, the project can be seen as an example of how contemporary design can combine simplicity and functionality, creating not just a home, but a carefully considered and serene living experience.
